And making headlines today...
2nd October 2005
Its 4.09pm on a bright and seemingly sunny day. This is Sandra Sully and this is the latest news. (music playing)
The small button called "who's viewed me?" caused considerable panic yesterday when members realised that the whole world they call their 'friends' were able to ferret out that they have been viewing their profiles.
This latest new addition by Friendster is one of the many devices Friendster has used, to ensure that members can find out more about who are interested in their sad lives.
Of course, ever since the advent of Friendster, next to the dog (woof woof), Friendster has become Man's best friend.
The lives of millions have become an online display for all the world to see. While it ensured that friends far apart are always updated on each other's lives, and this can sometimes be amusing, convenient and often downright depressing, it has also become a way of self-expression.
What truly disturbs the professors at the "School of Man has evolved into Lonely Beings", is that Friendster has yet again achieved to sweep under the electronic rug the underlying problems of today's society.
We are a society where humans have become increasingly isolated from each other. People need the extra 'contact' that Friendster can give. Humans have become crass and less emphatic. People have blogs because they have something to say but nobody will listen. They talk about their lives because they simply want people to care.
Also, they hope that their past nemeses would also read about the fantastic time they are having, in hopes that the enemy will find a hole to crawl in and cry. They want to look like they have a life and convince themselves that the testimonials will provide the evidence for such. While testimonials can testify as to how great and funky they are, there is also an unwritten rule that "if you write something good for me, i'll write something good for you ok?".
so in truth while testimonials may provide some basis as to who the person really is, do not be so shocked (By George, noo!) when people are not all they seem.
But as I digress from the issue, it should be known that members were very relieved to find that they have the option of being anonymous while viewing friends' profiles. The many sighs of relief that could be heard across Asia and all of Europe (sorry America but you just won't listen!) were very heartfelt when Friendster (after realising it played a nasty joke on its members) decided to clear any records of profile viewing and set the number back to 0.
Again professors at the "School of It is true. Man can be an Island as long as they have Friendster", agree that people are in deeply ingrained denial when they choose not to let friends know that they are in actual fact curious about their friends' lives. Other than that being a really long sentence, humans are in denial, that they care. Even when the profile they are viewing is someone who they have never spoken to but only seen or heard of, they still care (why i'm not sure).
It is noted that this news had taken a very morose and jaded turn, a result of the musings of yours truly, the Dean of the "School of the Perpetually Misunderstood and Inevitably Screwed". She would also like to add another two cents to this riveting discussion.
The content of this news reflect none so whatever of the true thoughts of yours truly. The seemingly double entendres implied are up to the reader's sole discretion. It is not the author's intent to be so cynical but rather it is an innate unavoidable attribute.
This has been Sandra Sully. More news later after I go check who has viewed my profile.
