At midnight please
Right now at this very moment, I am wishing for a fairy god mother. I have only one wish. A car that can magically appear to me at 12 midnight every Monday night.
The reason is very simple. Public transport here in Melbourne is truly the pits. Especially if you are trying to get home from the outer suburbs. Unfortunately as part of my ED rotation, I have to spend at least one evening shift with my supervisor. That shifts ends at 12 midnight in some dark and dangerous suburb called Dandenong. But that does not really deter me. I would not mind walking to the train station or wait for the bus except that there are none. Buses here end at 8pm. Horrid.
Taxis are expensive and for the hellish ride that you get, it is simply paying an exorbitant fee to get your life killed.
Eventually I know I will have to succumb to driving and getting a car. If not, I will have to move within walking distance to the hospital but this is impossible as everyone gets rotated out to different sites every few months.
So I've managed to keep my evening shifts to once a week, as much as I'm tempted to go for more. Afterall don't all the interesting stuff happen after hours?
Dear fairy god mother if you're listening, just a simple car that would magically appear outside the hospital at midnight would be great yah. Oh yah, make sure it's an auto.
Days like this I'm embarassed to be from this tiny dot of a country.
Setting: at lunch with other students.
"Eh Mun you work? Where? Why?!" bewildered fellow Singaporean.
"Yeah I work at the dining hall." said me.
"Yah but why?!" his voice becoming more bewildered by the second.
"Errr, so that I can get money. You know that's the most common reason people work you know," said me.
"But why? Most Singaporeans are rich whaat," he replied.
Clearly he has never ventured out of his little hole in Singapore.
Disclaimer: I know my parents are fortunate enough to send me to school here, but I would never describe myself as rich or rich enough to not work part-time. There are a lot of poor people in Singapore. Sure the airport gives the appearance of a rich and prospering country, but if you look around hard enough, for example, to the area of subsidised flats, you will meet some families who live in less than rich circumstances.
