Change is good
One of the interesting things about the workplace here is the flexibility. Job sharing, I think, is awesome. Two doctors sharing one job or one post. Time for family, time to study and opportunity to work. Depending on the unit, you work for 2-3 weeks then you have leave for 2-3 weeks and the other registrar takes over, then vice versa. The important thing is a good handover. Wouldn't it be awesome if there is job-sharing back home?
Not to forget, most hospitals have child care centers on site. It does make a bit more room for someone wanting to have a career and family. Of course, it is still difficult, especially when doctors here have to complete rural rotations - which means separation from your children. But job sharing is still awesome. 'Happy undivorced, unestranged from children' doctors make better doctors, no?
I welcomed the change of registrars today - the day even greeted me with clear blue skies and glorious sun. So much so, when we finished our consultant ward round, I suggested we sit in the sun while we do our paper round.
My very nice interns treated me to coffee as our sallow skins received the much needed Vitamin D. The change of registrars has really made an impression on how a registrar can make life quite stressful.
I have to say, without being sexist, male registrars are pretty laid-back. Not uptight and pushy. Not full of thinly-veiled impatience. Big yay for me! Life is looking good for the next two weeks at least.
Now if only we could have a change of consultants.
